Delay in Diagnosis Causing Brain Injury

There are times when medical professionals or hospital care givers do not follow the well-known acceptable practices that would detect conditions that threaten the brain.  Unfortunately, the failure to properly investigate certain signs and symptoms can allow a stroke, a hemorrhage, or other brain injury to occur.

Our Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania brain injury law firm has investigated and pursued many cases of such injuries. Some of the classic presentations by patients include having episodes of blurred vision, inability to use a hand or arm, slurred speech or neck pain that may suggest a blockage of blood circulation to the brain and a stroke follows within days or weeks thereafter. We have hired the best experts to tell us what medical intervention should have been done and if the stroke could have been avoided. Some of the cases have involved the failure of hospital personnel or a doctor failing to give a “clot busting” drug known as a thrombolytics when a stroke is in progress. Other cases have involved the failure to diagnose a defect or tear in the inside of an artery supplying the brain with oxygenated blood. These dissections, as they are known, create a flap blocking the blood and clots that break off and travel to the brain.

Symptoms That May Lead to Brain Injuries

Headache is always a key symptom. The quality and duration of headache with other symptoms can lead to the diagnosis of a space-occupying benign cyst that blocks the flow of fluid in the brain causing the brain to herniate, or move suddenly against other structures causing severe brain damage.

There are many other ways a delay in investigating symptoms can lead to irreversible serious brain injury that incapacitates the patient. Most of these occur from either a hemorrhage in the brain or a lack of oxygenated blood to the brain.
